The Sunday League side began their Division Four campaign with a
resounding 142 run win against visiting Barnstaple & Pilton 3rds. An
opening century stand between Dan Hardy (57) and Simon Bailey (64) was
the foundation of the 199 run total. The two openers swapped run-for-run
as both passed their respective 50s within a couple of deliveries but
equally, as so often happens with "big" partnerships, both fell in quick
succession.
Gary Chappell batting at number four struck an aggressive quick-fire 37,
his knock including four huge 6s. The other batting contributions came
from number three John Cheadle (14), Eliot Acton (6) and the Acton
father and son combination of Ross (3) and Robert (4) as the innings
closed on 199-5 after 45 overs. For the visitors Rod Halls had 3-40.
The Barnstaple & Pilton reply, in dampening conditions, got off to a
reasonable start but quickly fell away, closing on 57 all out after 33.2
overs. In the visitors' innings it was very much a "family affair" as
the McEndoos took centre stage.
Dad - Pat, the North Devon League Chairman, top scored with a three
boundary 19, his 14 year old son Henry was second highest scorer with 12
and the game's youngest player, 12 year old George McEndoo was not out 3
when the final wicket fell.
John Cheadle marked his first competitive game for the Club with 3 for
11 in 8 overs. Eliot Acton had 2 for 16 in 5 and Les Kent in a cameo
spell at the end of the game that produced figures of 2 for 1 from a
couple of overs.
Other bowling stats were: Ross Acton 0-10 in 5; Gary Chappell 1 for 10
in 9; and Rob Thomas 1 for 5 in 3. So a 20 point start to the campaign
for the side.
Elsewhere in Division Four, newly promoted Bude - they won Division Five
last year - gained a second successive 20 point haul when thrashing
North Devon 3rds by a massive 256 runs. Bude scored 344 for 8 in their
45 overs and then rolled the visitors out for just 88.
