Spare a thought for cricket secretary Chris Dean who suffered a painful experience prior to the weekends fixtures after an attack by a cat at his Cullompton home. The injuries were not quite enough to keep him at the pleasure of the local NHS Hospital but they did require treatment, which left him unable to hold a bat or indeed drive a car.

The "Mad Moggy" was a house cat that used to share the Deans Cullompton residence until doing a disappearing act a year ago only to suddenly return late last week when, in the best time-honoured tradition of Alfred Hitchcock tales - the cat set about Chris in such a way that he definitely came off second best - a paw loser! That is a terrible line - shoot the author!

A happy footnote, Dean was able to celebrate the confirmation of his Sunday side being the North Devon League Third Division titleholders as the injuries did not prevent him lifting a champagne flute!
