It was quite a day for the Foan household on Sunday. Our very
own club Chairman would have been delighted with the combined
efforts of his brother Mike and nephew Richard. Mike Foan
scored a half-century helping his Cheriton Fitzpaine side to the
North Devon League Fifth Division title in the clubs second
ever season of Sunday League cricket and Richard led Sandford to
a second successive Devon Senior Cup win, with a 72-run victory
over Plympton at Tavistock on Sunday.
Batting first Sandford struggled to a closing total of 169
with four players making tidy contributions, Adrian Small (29),
Neil Bettis (28), David Lye (30) and Joel Tuccia (29) all
chipping in but the total was more than enough for the cup to
return to Creedy Park as Plympton were bowled out for just 97.
The reply was up and running on 37 without loss but then five
wickets fell before the score reached 45 and the game was over!
Richard Baggs, the skipper when Sandford won the cup last year,
bagged three wickets and there were two each for Trevor Anning
and current captain Richard Foan.
Post-match, a delighted skipper said:
I was confident that we had got sufficient runs, and
so it proved. Any score over 140 on that pitch was
potentially enough to win it and I always thought getting
170 was going to be a massive ask for them. We then won the
game with a mix of excellent bowling and superb fielding."
