| Former Cricket Club stalwart Mike
Kellow was in the news at the weekend scoring his maiden century 40
years after he first played a senior game of cricket for Bradninch.
Mike plays his cricket these days at village club Upottery, and is
generally used as a 2nd XI middle-order bat and a frontline seam
bowler but on Saturday he was sent in to open in the sides E
Division East 2nd XI home game with Countess Wear. Kellow opening
the batting for the first time in his life, found himself minus two
partners with the core on just 6 but then he was joined by Darren
Drew (74) and the pair added 103 for the 3rd wicket. When Drew was
out, in came brother Fred, who scored 45 and added 107 with Kellow
for the 5th wicket.
With his score on 90 Kellow pulled a thigh muscle and his
skipper, Dan Prettejohn came out to act as his runner. Three lusty
blows took the opening bat ever nearer his first ever score of three
figures and then, on 99 his runner completed a quick single to bring
up the magical 'ton'. A couple of balls later a tired Kellow missed
a straight one and was bowled for 101.
Unable to bowl owing to the thigh strain Kellow couldn't cap the
perfect day with a bagful of wickets as the opposition closed on
186-8 but the Upottery Club Treasurer still managed to smile saying,
"I was certainly very, make that very, very, tired. It's been a
long time coming, but most certainly worth the wait", after four
decades of service to the Sport - well done Mike Kellow! |
