Many of our clubs older campaigners will be sorry to hear of
the passing of an umpire who stood at our Keynsham Road
headquarters in matches between the clubs over the years.
Plymouth Cricket Club Umpire John Philp collapsed and died while
on a bird watching holiday in the Himalaya Mountains, according
to Plymouth Cricket Club. Chairman Ken Wheaton said members
had few details about what had happened to Mr Philip who was 70
and lived at Mount Gould. Mr Wheaton said news of Mr Philp's
death had come as a shock to the club, based at Plymouth Sports
Club off Outland Road.
He said: We are going to talk to John's solicitor to find
out exactly what happened. It's not clear whether his body is
going to be brought home I would hope so, as we'd like to give
him a good send-off.
Mr Wheaton said Mr Philp was a private man, and added: He
had a lot of friends, but didn't often talk about himself. All
we know is that he was on a bird-watching holiday in India, and
he collapsed.
Mr Philp had umpired for the club for nearly three decades,
and had played for Plymouth before that.
Another club member said: John was in his 70s, but he was
really fit. He is going to be a sad loss to the club. |
