The
Clubs 2nd XI were held up by the last pair of Paignton batsmen
who blocked out Simon Baileys final couple of deliveries to see
their side to a close of 196-9 responding to the home sides
offering of 239-7. Lukas Fencl, batting with Club Secretary
Chris Dean as runner, top scored with 57. Mind you as Dean
suggested post-match:
I told the younger lads that today showed just why I
smoke, as it clearly slows my good self up whilst also
levelling the running track so to speak to allow the lesser
mortals in my company to keep pace with me.
Dean himself had troubled the scores for just five runs when
he was dismissed and as he also quipped post-match:
Clearly it was a ploy that worked to help boost the
run rate.
Other contributions of note came from Andy Nichols (35),
Matt Jarrett (25) and the clubs chairman Derrick Foan (24) and
there was a very generous offering of extras with no fewer than
48 adorning the score book at the close of the innings. There
was also a very welcome return to club cricket for former
skipper Chris Acton who announced his first appearance in the
clubs colours this term with a superb cover drive that zipped
its way over the surface towards the mobile nets at the
boundary. When the visitors batted, Bailey, Nichols, Billy
Wakeley and Phil Chappell all bagged braces of wickets and there
was one too for Mark Budgie Perrott, but Paignton held on. |
