Bradninch Cricket Clubs Sunday 2nd XI were left frustrated when
their North Devon League game at Black Torrington was called off
despite there being blazing wall to wall sunshine across the
county. The problem is that the scheduled hosts are having a
terrible time with player availability and this cry off was
their fifth successive one. Bradninch secretary Chris Dean
sympathises with their plight:
I took a call from a really distraught fellow
secretary who explained just how much work is going into
trying to keep their club afloat. It seems the problem is
simply one of numbers. They have a small but very committed
group of not so young people at the very heart of the club
but struggle to create much enthusiasm from the local
younger cricketers who seem to be drawn to the bigger clubs
in the area. However I gather that hope springs eternal for
they are set to possibly merge with Halwill and that would
allow cricket to continue at Black Torrington. One thing is
clear, this is the cutting edge of grass roots cricket and
the game can ill afford to lose such clubs, I wish them well
and we look forward to perhaps receiving them later in the
season.
The game being called off also left the Acton clan without a
game, for father and son combinations of Rob and Ross and Chris
and Eliot were set to play for the Sunday side: No action
for the Acton clan today quipped Chris Dean who
incidentally was also set to play with his son Nick three
fathers and three sons in the same XI hows that! |
