Bradninch Sunday North Devon League XI did their chances of avoiding the drop into the second tier a power of good with a 133-run victory at home to a Lynton & Lynmouth side who have now been dragged into the battle to beat the drop.

Batting first the hosts saw a superb cameo innings from teenager Matt Jarrett who launched into his innings after taking a look at the bowling with a massive six spanked off the visitors’ opening bowler!

After the early loss of Tim Piper for 2, Jarrett and Rob Acton (52), put on 98 for the 2nd wicket. When Jarrett was finally dismissed he had struck four 4s and as many 6s in his offering of 54. Other runs came from Dan Hardy (48) – he and skipper Eliot Acton (19) put on 51 for the 4th wicket, whilst Pete Hardy chipped in with 18 in a closing total of 238.

The visitors, who needed the win to avoid being dragged into the battle to avoid the drop, never got going and were finally bowled out for 105 as wickets fell to Billy Wakeley (3-28), Phil Chappell (2-15), Dan Hardy (2-18) and Pete Hardy, who claimed the last two wickets with his only two balls and so will be on a hat-trick next time a Bradninch XI skipper throws him the ball!

The victory could prove to be priceless for it gives the side a real chance of avoiding the drop out of the top-flight. Next season, with Morebath about to be confirmed as being promoted into the top-flight it would mean SIX local Mid Devon derby matches next summer against Sandford, Heathcoat and Morebath.

Newton Tracey, beaten on the final ball at Victoria Park are odds on to take one of the two relegation tickets - their final game is HOME V FILLEIGH on September 6. Bideford have two to play - they come to BRADNINCH on Sunday September 6 and then a week later go to VICTORIA PARK, and Lynton & Lynmouth, who also have two to play, go to FILLEIGH next Sunday (Aug 30) and to SANDFORD (Sep 12).

We have five to play and two wins will suffice, IF one is against Bideford. WE play HEATHCOAT (who must win to claim title) next, then host BIDEFORD in a huge relegation game before a visit from NORTH DEVON (who, if we win at Heathcoat, would need to win at Kensham Park to seal the title!) and we end the season with a home game with FILLEIGH (Sep 13) and a Sep 20 game against SANDFORD.

Bradninch 11 3 6 2 79 8.77
