‘Atomic’ Ross, ‘Big Gaz’ and ‘Cool Hand’ Luke were the stars of
the show as the Darts team recovered from a 3-0 deficit to
battle back to secure a thrilling 5-4 victory over Conservative
Club at the cricket club’s Kensham Park headquarters on Friday
night.
The game started badly as Alan ‘Silky’ Dowrick and Eddie ‘Eagle’
Andress went down 1-2 and 0-2, respectively. This brought Steve
‘Biggles’ Birley to the oche and although he came back from a
leg down to level up, and then had umpteen darts at a double to
beat his opponent, who at one stage was facing a brush, lost 1-2
and so at 0-3 in the match it was doom and gloom for the
cricketing darts players.
Cometh the hour though cometh the men, and in this case it was
the heralded trio of Ross ‘Atomic’ Acton, Gary ‘Big Gaz’ Newall
and then Luke ‘Cool Hand’ Wrightson, who all won their games –
Atomic was again in scintillating form and it was his 2-0
victory that provided the bedrock for the comeback.
Big Gaz then lost a leg but stormed back throwing some fabulous
‘arries’ – and, with Cool Hand to play at base man – number six
spot – a levelling up at 3-3 was inevitable – and so it proved.
3-3 from 0-3 – what darts!
So to the doubles and the skipper (Atomic) placed his faith in
the partnership of Biggles and Big Gaz and they did not
disappoint – Big Gaz getting the double away in the first leg,
and then Biggles took out the finishing double, 1-0 and it was
quickly 2-0 as the pair again got away with Big Gaz and Biggles
pinned the double nine for the side to take the match lead for
the first time in the contest.
This saw Silky and Eagle head to the oche and they were up
against the visitors’ top pairing and, despite a really great
effort, the pair went down – 4-4 and another last game decider –
the team’s THIRD in FOUR outings!
Up stepped Atomic and Cool Hand to face their destiny – they
were up against a man and lady combination and in the first leg
threw a collection of darts that were more befitting sports day
at the local crèche! The young guns were woeful and slipped to a
0-1 deficit – but then they woke up!! Atomic got them away first
dart, Cool Hand picked out a treble 20, treble 20, single one
and suddenly they were back in it as Atomic sealed the levelling
up double.
With the wind in their sails the home pair sailed through the
final leg to collect a battling 2-1 win and the cricketers darts
team were left to munch on yet more of Muvver Rob’s (the ace
chef Robert Acton – father of Atomic) splendid after oche food,
contemplating a fine 5-4 victory.
