Match day eleven of the 18 week Francis Clark Devon League was
savaged by the heavy July rains leaving not one game across the
15 1st and 2nd XI Divisions being played to anything like a
finish.
The Bradninch 1st XI game at Plymouth did not get a start
leaving both sides to bank six points from what had been seen as
a real relegation battle. Elsewhere in the top-flight they
managed 22 overs at Bovey Tracey where the home side had reached
98-2 against Exeter who banked seven points to the home side’s
six. There were also 22 overs played at Instow where North Devon
had reached 90-2 against Plympton and here too the points went
seven to the visitors, six to the hosts.
The most play in the top-flight was at leaders Sidmouth where
they managed to play 23.1 overs as the home side were struggling
on 55-4 against Budleigh who took eight points to the champions
elect haul of six.
The least play – where there was action – was at Torquay where
Sandford were 21 without loss after 4.4 overs. Both sides banked
six points.
So going into next Saturday’s Mid Devon derby against Sandford,
Bradninch sit SEVEN points above the drop zone (Plymouth are
second bottom on 97) whilst hosts Sandford sit bottom on 95
points, nine behind Bradninch.
The Bradninch 2nd XI saw some action and indeed banked one of
the day’s biggest haul of points throughout the 15 Divisions
thanks to the ten points they mustered after having visitors
Axminster II 56-8 when a soggy Kensham Park became a washed out
Kensham Park!
Nick Dean was the star of the show with 3-4, Phil Chappell and
Mark Perrott both bagged braces. Sadly, in terms of the sides
outside promotion hopes, Cornwood II also banked ten points from
their rain hit game against Sidmouth who were 117-9 at premature
stumps.
So going into next week’s home game with leaders Paignton it
really is win or bust in terms of the promotion bid. Saturday’s
visitors to Kensham Park sit top, 47 points better off and,
after next week, there are just six games, and 120 points to
play for. Cornwood in 2nd place are 45 ahead of Phil Chappell’s
men who will go into Saturdays crunch game sitting 4th, 22
points adrift of 3rd placed Plymouth.
