There was most certainly ‘no double trouble’ for the cricketing
darts players when they turned round an end of singles 2-4
deficit to win all three doubles and indeed turn the match with
Pony & Trap on its head to record a 5-4 win in the side’s most
recent darts match in the Culm Valley Darts League.
The evening could not have got off to a better start as wins for
Atomic and Eddie the Eagle, saw the home side tear into a two
game lead. Ross ‘Atomic’ Acton, although well below his best in
the first leg (it took 12 minutes and umpteen pots at double one
to seal it), took charge in the 2nd leg to win his game and then
Alan ‘Silky’ Dowrick sealed a similar victory to put the side
into pole position.
Then it began to go wrong –Steve ‘Biggles’ Birley never had a
dart at a single double as Melvyn Boyce beat him 2-0, Gary ‘Big
Gaz’ Newall had doubles troubles and went down as did Eddie
‘Eagle’ Andress and Luke ‘Cool Hand’ Wrightson.
So 2-4 going into the first of the three doubles. Atomic and
Cool Hand gave the side hope with a fine win and this brought
Big Gaz and Biggles to the oche and they promptly claimed a 1-0
lead in an amazing 16 darts – and didn’t look back to win 2-0 to
set up a winner takes all finale with Silky and Rob ‘Javelin’
Acton left with the task of trying to complete a remarkable
comeback.
And how the last two played, Silky was his usual reliable self
and Javelin was, well, quite simply, in match winning mood and
fittingly it was Javelin who threw the wining dart to seal a
thrilling victory 5-4.
