Football crowds sing a traditional song that begins with the
line “we only have ten men” which is often sung when a side are
winning after having a man sent off.
Last Sunday, the narrow defeat to Plymouth in the opening round
of the Devon Senior Cup – a prestigious 50-over competition –
saw us play the entire game with ten men although it was very
much the case that we had ELEVEN players at Kensham Avenue ready
to do their best for the club only for the competition rules to
state that each team must have a scorer and as such, if one is
not present then a player must do the job and the side take to
the field a player light.
How that came to roost at the death of Sunday’s thrilling run
chase against the visiting side that ended in such valiant
defeat.
For the record book it was Pete Hardy (now there’s an individual
surely deserving of a long service medal for duties over and
above the call on behalf of all things sporting at Bradninch),
who ended up in the scorers box!
