The sad parting has been announced of the
President of the Devon Cricket Club, David
Shepherd, after a long battle with cancer.
David Robert Shepherd was born in Bideford on
the 27th December 1940. He umpired in 86 tests
and 164 one-day internationals. He played
initially for Devon from 1959 -1964. He scored
108 on his debut for Gloucestershire in 1965.
He completed his playing career in his adopted
county in 1979. After retiring he became an
umpire in 1981 and was quickly elevated to a
test match status in 1985. By then he had
already stood in the 1983 World Cup.
He officiated in six World Cups in all -
including three finals. It was his skill as an
umpire and the respect he generated among the
players for which he will be best remembered
during a career which included 92 test matches
and 172 one-day Internationals. David Shepherd
was a true Devonian and indeed a very genuine
gentleman.
The England and Wales Cricket Board today paid
tribute to one of the game's greatest umpires,
David Shepherd who passed away at the age of 68.
David Collier the ECB Chief Executive said that
he was deeply saddened by the news of David
Shepherd's death and added:
"Shep was not only one the greatest umpires of
all time but he was also a friend to all
involved in cricket. His cheery personality
created a wonderful atmosphere at every match in
which he was involved and he will be sadly
missed by everyone involved in cricket
throughout the world."
