The Cricket Club clubhouse was beautifully
decked out – and mighty full too, for the
christening party of Lilly Jennifer Birley on
the penultimate Sunday of January.
Lilly is the first child of Oliver and Emma
Birley – first son of 'Biggles' and the club did
the Birley clan PROUD with a simply magnificent
afternoon, a great time was had by all.
The proud Father – Oliver – delivered a speech
fitting if his family name (anybody who has
endured a Biggles speech will know what that
quip means!!) – and the kitchen area served up
an amazing array of cold, warm and hot food –
what’s more the two afternoon 'Mine-hosts', on
behalf of the Cricket Club, Messrs. Edward
'Eagle' Andress and Paul 'P-nut' Nott did a
splendid job of ensuring that everything went
smoothly behind the bar.
A final word on then matter from the proud
Grandpa, Steve Birley (aka Biggles) who said:
"The way that the Club was laid out in terms of
the seating arrangements, the food lay-out and
the general 'look' of the Cricket Club, brought
memories of some fantastic occasions in that
dear old building, one that carries so many
memories for so many people in and around
Bradninch, both of the cricketing fraternity and
the non-sporting people.
I would like to thank the club for hosting such
a fantastic event and would recommend (with
a capital R) the club to anybody else thinking
of staging an event that requires a large room,
a fully equipped and functioning kitchen, and of
course a smashing bar – and loo’s too!
Oliver and Emma were keen to have Lilly
christened in the same St Disen’s Church that
they were married in and, when they told me that
was what they were doing then for me, the ONLY
place for the party afterwards was the dear
Cricket Club!"
