This summer is the 25th anniversary of an extraordinary
partnership that graced the Bradninch cricket field in the
summer of 1985.
In a Devon League C Division game, former Gloucestershire County
cricketer, the very popular Jim Foat (aka Foaty) and another
most likeable of individuals, John McKinnell, son of the late
Hugh McKinell who still has a bench at Kensham Park in his
memory, came together at the crease against Kingsbridge.
The pair went on to put on a stand of 229 for the 4th wicket and
that remains to this day, a record. Indeed it is currently the
longest standing batting record of all the Devon League records.
Now here’s food for thought - how about a game later this
summer to honour the event? Perhaps a 1985 XI versus a current
XI - hopefully with Mess’rs Foat and McKinnell in attendance -
now that sounds like real fun! (Biggles would even try and get a
pair of whites that would fit his considerable frame for this
one!)
