The 2nd XI suffered a devastating but not terminal blow to their title hopes on Saturday when well-beaten by third-placed Heathcoat.

Now the Championship will be decided in a nervy last day that takes Bradninch to Honiton, Kentisbeare entertain relegation-threatened Countess Wear and Heathcoat host Kilmington.

After winning the toss, skipper Craig Hawkins put the visitors in, and despite a decent start with the ball - the first ten overs were bowled by Eliot Acton and Liam Raybould - Acton kept a good line and length and forced a couple of missed shots, his five over spell came at a cost of just 6 runs. Indeed his first 15 deliveries were all dot balls, whilst at the other end fellow teenager Liam Raybould was a little more erratic but still had the batsmen playing and missing, but from overs 11-20 the visitors began to stamp their mark on the proceedings.

Those next ten overs went for a run a ball as openers Blight and Davis took the score to 77 before Blight went to a smart Mark Perrott catch off the bowling of Les Kent. There followed a 41 run partnership for the 2nd wicket before Lancelles was adjudged lbw to Magnus Bowles. 1st XI player Chris Hill then came in and cracked the ball about before being very harshly given run out - a decision he showed his disbelief in by waiting to begin his walk for quite a time.

With the score at 153-3 Liam Raybould claimed a couple of wickets. Skipper Craig Hawkins gained another as the innings close on 224-5. This was a very 'gettable' target but was certainly 40 or 50 MORE than the visitors should have mustered.

Opener Jimmy Davis finally went for 111 but was dropped no less than three times - twice by the unfortunate Les Kent who dropped him in the deep and again off his own bowling when offered a fierce return catch.

There were also some squabbles in the field - runs 'given away' too, making it a below standard performance in the field. Nonetheless a run chase was certainly on given the strength of the batting, though Derrick Foan batting at number seven seemed a strange selection as his game is all about innings building. In a run chase he is the ideal batsman to go out, hold an end up and let the batsmen run chase around him.

This job was done very well by his brother Mike who top scored on 69 but wickets fell at regular intervals and from 80-2 the innings fell away to 115-6 finally closing on 152. Nat Davey had the second highest score with 28, Magnus Bowles, batting at eight, was unbeaten on 19 and Rob Acton went for 12, but there were four ducks and the six points taken from the game, coupled with the 19 point haul achieved by Kentisbeare at Axminster III's leaves the table on a knife edge going into next Saturday's last day matches.

The table now looks like this:
Bradninch250
