Newall hits half-century as side
return from Bovey with half a dozen points
Match day two brought improvement for the 1st XI but defeat for
the 2nds as the 1st XI took a losing draw from a trip to Bovey
Tracey whilst the 2nds, who were short on batting and bowling,
battled bravely before going down to Plymouth III at Kensham
Park.
Richard Foan was caught at point off the very first ball he faced but
opening partner Gary Newall stuck around to become the 3rd
Bradninch player to register a top-flight half-century with a
dogged knock of 65 from 35 overs at the crease.
Tim Piper (22), Gary Chappell (20) and an unbeaten 25 from Ross
Acton were the only other scores of note as the reply closed on
a resolute 176-8 and six valuable points were brought back to
headquarters by the side.
Four points to the 2nds who sit 6th
in the early table
The 2nd XI, who fielded a side showing four enforced changes
from their splendid opening day win at Axminster, did very well
to restrict visiting Plymouth III to 157-9 with braces of
wickets to Mark Perrott and Luke Wrightson but, apart from Chris
Dean’s top score of 22 and skipper Phil Chappell’s 19, no one
else could make much of an impression with the bat as the reply
was done and dusted for 80.
The fledgling top-flight table shows only Sandford sitting below
Bradninch two games into the new campaign. The home side stroked
their way to an imposing total of 290-5 including 95 off the
final 14 overs of the innings. |
