The 2nd XI served up another Saturday best with a nine-wicket
victory at home to Barton 2nd XI to continue their march up the
Devon League A Division table.
After winning the toss skipper Phil Chappell invited the home
side to bat first and the move paid dividends as they were
bundled out for just 106.
The skipper led by supreme example sending down 11 overs, four
of which were maidens, for figures of 3-25. Opening partner Mark
‘Budgie’ Perrott bowled a full compliment of 15 overs with three
maidens for a superbly disciplined set of figures that read
2-24.
Andy Nicholls, the old war horse who has served the cause with
such magnificent distinction for so many moons, turned his arm
over to bowl 8.3 overs for figures of 1-20 and the other bowling
duties befell Matt Jarrett (1-20 in seven) and Nick Dean (1-20
in six).
Other points so worthy of mention in terms of the fielding was
an amazing stumping by Chris ‘lightning hands’ Dean and a catch
by Rob ‘how to make holding ‘em look so
easy’ Acton. Brother Chris got in on the act too swooping
like a long-legged ostrich to pick up and sling the ball in to
effect a run out, one of two in another glorious afternoon of
superb ground fielding from Chappell’s men.
Club chairman Derrick Foan went for just 2, caught behind, as
the reply got off to a bad start, but Nat Davey (45no) and Chris
Acton (38no) saw the side to a nine wicket win.
