Bradninch 2nd XI went into their home meeting with leaders
(unbeaten) Paignton knowing that anything but a home win was
required to give them even an outside chance of overhauling the
100% table topping side.
Phil Chappell's men did almost everything asked of them in the
contest and but for a miserable dollop of bad old English
mid-summer weather would surely still be in the title race.
As it is the side will probably need to now focus on looking to
overhaul Cornwood II in their bid to join the elite in the
Francis Clark Devon League 2nd XI competition.
It is a fact that on a damp day across the county, sides batting
first rarely came out of their games with victory - Bradninch
2nd XI almost bucked the trend having the visitors even down for
125 in answer to the home offering of 150-5.
Simon Bailey rolled back the years to top score with 40. Simon,
a club stalwart of probably more years than the Exeter based
nice guy probably prefers to own up to, struck a sweet 40 and
Andy Nicholls - now there's another to have graced the Kensham
square for umpteen moons also hit 30 and the home innings
closed on a competitive 150-5.
What was needed now was a strike bowler to get at the visitors.
Sadly with the 1st XI missing seamer Paul Nott it meant Eliot
Acton, who may well have proved to be the one missing ingredient
for the 2nds, going to Creedy Park with Joel Murphy's men and as
it happened it was the less pacey deliveries which caused the
problems for the Paignton batsmen.
It was batting hero Bailey who took the bowling honours with a
return of 3-21 whilst Nicholls also bagged a brace but the
visiting side refused to buckle down then order, closing on
125-7.
So 12 points to the home side, twice as many as the visitors
departed with but sadly the gap between the sides was not
reduced by as much as it had been hoped for.
With six games to play the leading positions are:
Paignton 12 9 0 1 0 2 188 Cornwood 12 8 0 1 0 3 186
Plymouth 12 5 1 3 1 2 170 Bradninch 12 5 3 1 1 2 147
