Mark 'Budgie' Perrott was the star of the show as the 2nd XI
banked all but a brace of the maximum 20 points on offer when
they defeated South Devon at a damp Kensham Park on the first
Saturday of the final month of the Francis Clark Devon League
season.
The home side batted first and posted a healthy 178-7 thanks to
some fine contributions, most notably from Rob Acton with a
magnificent unbeaten 60. Andy Nicholls chipped in with a knock
of 30 and that figure was matched by some charitable visiting
bowling that yielded 30 extras!
The run-chase saw three visiting batsmen into their early 20s
before being dismissed and it all became something of a
procession as Perrott served up a superb spell of bowling to
claim a fivefer and return the outstanding figures of 5-9. Paul
Nott, who made a big difference to the side's strike bowling
options, bagged a brace at 2-25 and there was a similar return
for teenager Nick Dean with 2-33.
So an 18 point win and the season continues to go so well for
Phil Chappell's men. In any other campaign their form would
surely be of the promotion kind but sadly this term there are
two sides going along merrily at the top of the table, both
unbeaten with just four to play.
The current gap between 2nd placed Paignton (213pts) and Phil
Chappell's men (173) is not insurmountable, but there is also
the not so small matter of Plymouth (174) points also feeling
part of the promotion party.
It will take something of a Devon Lock disaster for either of
the current top two of Cornwood and Paignton to let slip that
current 39 point gap but hope springs eternal that the gap can
be closed over the final four games with 80 points to contest.
What is crystal clear is that this coming weekend is going to
surely PIVOTAL as the top two meet each other at Paignton and so
our 2nd XI simply MUST defeat Shobrooke Park at home, look for a
Cornwood win at Paignton and that could make the August 15
matchday look very interesting indeed!
