The Bradninch bid for promotion out of the 2nd XI A Division and into the top-flight of the Francis Clark Devon League continues after a comprehensive walloping of hapless basement dwellers Shobrooke Park, who were beaten by 146 on what will be their final visit to Kensham Park for at least a season of league cricket.

Batting first the home side raced to maximum batting points as runs came in the sun down the order. Nick Dean led the way with an unbeaten, nearly jug evading, 45. Chairman Derrick Foan posted the 2nd best hit with 41 although there were also 43 extras conceded by the visiting side! What's more the home faithful were treated to a cameo knock from that wily old campaigner, the ever green Andy Nicholls who helped himself to 37.

Mark 'Budgie' Perrott then bagged himself another fivefer to return another set of splendid figures. Perrott's 5-27 takes him to an outstanding haul of 29 wickets for the campaign to date. Skipper Phil Chappell took 3-5 as the visitors were bundled out for just 93.

In the top of the table battle at Paignton it was visiting Cornwood who inflicted a first defeat of the campaign on their promotion rivals. Third in the morning, Plymouth also picked up a maximum haul and so there is no change at the top of the table heading into the final three games of the season.

The current top five reads:

Cornwood 15 11 0 1 0 3 246
Paignton 15 10 1 1 0 3 221
Plymouth 15 6 3 3 1 2 194
Bradninch 15 7 3 2 1 2 193
Plymstock 15 8 4 2 0 3 190

There are 60 points to play for with the next matchday serving up:

Barton v PLYMOUTH CORNWOOD v PLYMSTOCK Shobrooke Park v PAIGNTON Sidmouth v BRADNINCH

The only way that the Bradninch 2nds can achieve promotion now would seem to be for Paignton to engage in a Devon Lock type fall from grace. That would take some doing as next up they play the side that Bradninch brushed aside on Saturday, bottom of the table Shobrooke Park who have now lost ALL 13 of the games they have started this term.

A more realistic push is the one to finish 'Best of the rest' and so push the side into top billing in terms of next season's effort. But then it might rain - again - and the table look very different prior to the penultimate round of matches - here's hoping!
