Source: Stephen Birley Gary Chappell was
the stand-out star of the show for the Bradninch 1st XI as the
previous week's opening day disappointment at home to Braunton
was quickly forgotten. The side returned from Plympton with the
greater share of the points from a winning draw.
Max Fernie once again looked impressive with the bat as he
struck 33 from the top of the order. Haydn Murray continued his
fine early season form with the willow to strike a tidy 44 and
skipper Ross Acton weighed in with an unbeaten 30 but the star
of the pre-tea session was Chappell who stroked his way to a
superb half-century, finally losing his wicket for 55.
At the close of the innings one of the young South Africans,
Richardt Saaiman was unbeaten with the skipper on 4. Other
batsmen’s scores were Tim Piper (14), Elliot Acton (6) and Joe
Webb (0) as the innings came to a close on 213-6.
Plympton never looked like getting close to that score
especially once skipper Ross Acton threw the ball to that man
Chappell. The Bath University student who had claimed four
wickets on match day one at home to Braunton, went on to spin
his way to a first fivefer of the new campaign, finishing with
splendid figures of 5-33 as the reply stubbornly ground to a
close of 150-7.
This left Bradninch with a 14-point haul from a morale
boosting winning draw. The home side gained eight points from
the contest.
