There was very much an international flavour to the first
Bradninch 1st XI win of the new Francis Clark Devon League
Premier Division season as they claimed an eight run win at
Paignton.
The story of the game was much about contributions from an
Englishman, an Australian and a pair of South Africans. Skipper
Ross Acton (75), led his side to a close of 195, they lost their
final wicket with four balls of the 50th over remaining.
The second highest contribution with the bat was a knock of 27
from 16 year-old South African Richardt Saaiman. The other
Bradninch batsmen into double figures were Chris Acton (17),
Jacobus Pienaar (15) and Haydn Murray (11). The highest
partnership for the Mid Devon men was one of 76 between skipper
Ross Acton and his Uncle Chris, for the 5th wicket.
When Paignton batted they began well and, when on 130-3 with
wickets and overs left to win the game, were the favourites. But
then skipper Acton switched his bowling attack round. Australian
Murray came on and claimed 4-34 and South African teenager
Pienaar took 3-47 and the final home wicket was taken with the
hosts' eight runs shy of the visitors' tally.
This was an excellent victory for the side and in particular
young skipper Acton who has certainly settled into the role very
well. What makes the result all the more impressive was that it
was achieved without the early season 'star' with the absence,
on University cricketing duty, of Gary Chappell who should be
restored to the ranks for the game on match day four next
weekend.
The team move up to third with the win in South Devon and are
back in action on Saturday when they entertain Champions
Sidmouth who claimed a first win of the season on match day
three, beating Braunton by 132 runs.
