Bradninch 2nd XI returned from a visit to Plymouth with a
winning draw after being denied victory by the hosts' tail-end
Charlie’s.
Rob Acton was in great touch as he underpinned a total of 191-6
with a top score of 77 and there was a delightful contribution
of 35 not out from Syed Hussain. What had been missing in
previous early season games – an innings of real stickability
(someone who can stay at the crease to help develop a total)
came from the experienced campaigner Andy Nicholls who spent 30
overs in the sunshine for his innings of 14.
There were two fine partnerships with Simon bailey and Rob Acton
putting on 61 for the 5th wicket and then Acton and Syed Hussain
adding 72 for the 6th – Acton being run out with just two balls
of the innings remaining.
The home side laboured to their close of 144-9, but there was
only the one opportunity to win the game with the last home
batsman left to face a single delivery.
He survived and Phil Chappell’s side had to settle for a draw -
albeit a winning one.
The evergreen Nicholls, for the third time this term already,
led the bowling honours with a superb return of 4-21 from 13
overs. There was a brace too for Mark Perrott who sent down 14
overs, four of which were maidens for figures of 2-30 and
another of the club’s truly living legendry stalwarts, Simon
Bailey, who went for no fewer than 17 in his first over, then
sent down the next five to take 2-20 (finishing with 2-37 from
his spell).
