Gary Chappell served up the spell of his young cricketing life
to date by taking all but two of hosts Budleigh Salterton’s
wickets as the 1st XI totally outplayed the Ottermouth men to
claim a seven wicket success.
The early stages of the contest gave no indication of what was
to come as the home openers, Sandy Allen and Rob Dawson, who
have been responsible for almost 70 percent of the Budleigh runs
this term, made their way to 39 without loss of wicket.
There were a couple of chances - albeit very difficult ones,
offered by both as skipper Ross Acton got mighty close to a
stunning catch 'round the corner' and then Tim Piper, at slip,
parried a screamer and so nearly held on to the afters.
It was Eliot Acton who broke the pair up, taking a smart return
catch off his own bowling to end the knock of Dawson for 13.
Enter centre stage Chappell who proceeded to send down 13.4
almost unplayable deliveries and he finished with the quite
magnificent figures of eight wickets for just 16 runs!
What made his work all the more impressive was that he knocked
the stumps four times and trapped another of his victims leg
before with a beauty. He also held a smart return catch and his
other two wickets were taken with the help of the hands of Haydn
Murray and skipper Acton.
The Budleigh innings was all done and dusted two balls from the
end of the 38th over for the sum total of 98.
The reply got off to a poor start with Max Fernie clean bowled
by former Bradninch skipper Joel Murphy - who was responsible
for the home total being nudged to within two of a batting point
with a twenty run last wicket partnership with young Eliot
Marks.
A second wicket fell at 29 with the loss of Murray for 19, but
then South African teenager Richardt Saaiman (35) and Tim Piper
(24no), took the total to 67 before young Saaiman departed and
that left skipper Ross Acton (17no) to join Piper at the crease
and seal a comfortable victory. The reply took 27.1 overs.
The win lifts the side into third spot, where they were prior to
the previous weekend's defeat at home to Sidmouth.
Sidmouth, who beat Exeter by six wickets, stay top with 87
points and North Devon, who hammered Braunton by eight wickets,
sit sec9ond a point behind.
Then come Bradninch with 64 points, four better off than
Paignton who were washed out after an hours play against Bovey
Tracey.
The other top flight game on match day five was at Plympton
where Plymouth departed with a losing draw.
