Bradninch booked a place in the last eight of the Tony Pryce
Devon Senior Cup with a splendid home victory over A Division
Torquay.
Eliot Acton and Richardt Saaiman opened the innings for the home
side and had 18 on the board when the South African teenager
departed bowled for 8. Haydn Murray then joined Acton before the
latter was bowled for 18 with the score on 44.
Next to come to the wicket was Ross Acton and he and Murray took
the score to 77 before the Aussie was run out for 16. The
Saturday 1st XI skipper was the joined by Dan Hardy and the pair
took the total to 135 before Acton was caught for a fine knock
of 45.
Skipper for the day, Tim Piper then linked up with Hardy.
'Pipes' has not been in the runs this term to date but he
certainly found some form in this game with a splendid innings
that yielded him 53 runs as he and Hardy put on 88 for the fifth
wicket. It was Hardy who fell sixth, his being the side's
biggest contribution, with the total on 243-6.
Matt Jarrett was next in and he added 20 with Piper before the
latter was caught. Nick Dean was bowled without troubling the
scorers at 243-7 and Jarrett was the eighth and final wicket to
fall for 13 on 252-8.
The two not out batsmen were Club Secretary Chris Dean (5no) and
Club Chairman Derrick Foan (0no) as the innings closed on 253-8
after 40 overs. Phil Chappell was the one batsman not to get out
in the middle.
The visitors had 31 on the board when they lost their first
wicket, a fine catch held by Eliot Acton off the bowling of his
cousin, Ross Acton. It was then 55-2 - Phil Chappell clean
bowling the other opener and then 57-3 as Acton claimed the
wicket of Justin Yau. There followed a 59 run partnership,
eventually broken by Haydn Murray with the help of a catch from
Dan Hardy.
With the home side on top it needed something special from the
visitors to get them back into the tie and they did indeed find
something special - a fifth wicket partnership of 102 runs,
finally ended, much to the relief of the large Kensham Park
crowd by Haydn Murray who got an lbw decision to see the end of
Neil Watkin for a top score of 71 for Torquay.
The crucial wicket was probably the next one, taken almost
immediately via a magnificent catch from Nick Dean off the
bowling of Eliot Acton and at 218-6 it seemed a lost cause for
the visitors. So it proved as Haydn Murray bagged a swift pair,
one another leg before and the other thanks to an other fine
catch from Dean Junior, to leave the reply all done and dusted
for 230.
So a last eight place beckons for Bradninch who will meet the
winners of the Braunton versus Exeter tie with the quarter final
to be played at Kensham Park on Sunday, July 4th (2pm).
The other quarter final ties are:
- Paignton or Budleigh versus Plympton
- Bovey Tracey versus Sidmouth
- Cornwood versus Tavistock
- Bradninch versus Exeter or Braunton.
