Source: Stephen Birley Bradninch II were
mighty close to becoming the first team to defeat A Division
leaders Hatherleigh.
The North Devon team arrived at Kensham Park with a record of
seven wins and two draws in their nine previous outings and when
the pair met at Hatherleigh on the opening day of the season the
game resulted in a resounding home win with a host score of
215-7 answered by Bradninch with 45 all out!
Things were very different this time round as the table
toppers batted first and were always up against it in the face
of some good home bowling. Jacobus Pienaar (playing his final
game for the club in the Devon league before he and South
African colleague Richardt Saaiman head back for their home
country) took 2-27. Chris Acton also bagged a brace with 2-52
and the most successful of the home bowlers was Mark 'Budgie'
Perrott with 3-31.
The run chase looked more than on as the home side made a
decent start but the middle order fell away and they were left
battling to claim the losing draw, closing on 108-9.
It was two of the cricket club’s longest serving players who
provided the two top scores in the reply as Andy Nicholls struck
23 and Simon Bailey chipped in with 19.
The losing draw leaves Phil Chappell’s side sitting fourth,
35 points shy of the side currently occupying the second
promotion berth behind Hatherleigh, Plymouth.
Next up is Saturday’s trip to second from bottom South Devon
who were beaten by five wickets when the sides met at Kensham
Park on match day two of the season.
