...but it's a
calamitous effort with the bat at Braunton.
Bradninch were beaten for the second time this term by
basement dwellers Braunton when the North Devon side won a low
scoring affair by two wickets. The result underlines the
inconsistency blighting the Kensham Park side's top flight
campaign, although they sit fifth in a mid-table berth, they
have now lost more than anybody else other than the bottom side.
In a tight top flight, Acton’s men sit 33 points shy of
second placed North Devon but equally are only 29 above the drop
zone.
But for a knock of 48 from Gary Chappell and one of 26 from
Tim Piper the Bradninch innings would have been of embarrassing
proportions as the third highest score was an unbeaten six from
teenager Nick Dean batting at number nine. There were no fewer
than four batsmen who failed to get off the mark with Haydn
Murray (caught), Ross Acton (caught), Joe Webb (lbw) and Matt
Jarrett (caught) being the unfortunate batters to have zero
beside their name!
From 17-3, Chappell and Piper took things to 61-4 but wickets
tumbled, the final one falling on 99 in the 38th over.
It needed something special to get Bradninch back into
contention and it was delivered by skipper Ross Acton who hit
the spot from the off, dismissing one of the openers without
troubling the scorers.
Acton went on to claim 5-33 from 18 superb overs. The reply
collapsed from a comfortable 44-2 to 52-6 and then was wobbling
on 86-8 but that was to be as good as it got for Bradninch as
the home side sealed only their second success of the season.
Gary Chappell picked up a couple of wickets with 2-31 from
another 18 exceptionally disciplined overs, the others to bowl
on the day were, Paul Nott (0-13 in three), Haydn Murray (1-18
in 5.1) and Elliot Acton (0-1 in two).
This weekend Ross Acton leads his side out at home to a
Plympton side they secured a winning draw against when the sides
met on the outskirts of Plymouth on the second Saturday of the
season in game that saw Gary Chappell hit a half century and bag
a fivefer.
