The Bradninch
Sunday XI chalked up a thrilling last over victory when they met
Old Grammarians at Kensham Park on the same day as the World Cup
Final in South Africa.
The tourists batted first and from a perilous 113-7, posted a
competitive 196. Mark ‘Budgie’ Perrott was the pick of the home
bowling with 3-16 and there was also a brace - two wickets in
two balls in fact - for Rob Acton.
Pete Hardy also claimed a wicket - his figures being 1-12
from one over, but that’s not the whole story for Hardy had last
bowled for the side in a North Devon League game two years
before and he had taken wickets with his final two balls of that
spell. So by claiming a leg before decision with his first
delivery against Old Grammarians he completed a two year
hat-trick!
The reply saw early runs from Matt Jarrett who opened and hit
22 but wickets then fell before Chris Dean provided the
foundation with what proved to be the top score of 34. Club
Chairman Derrick Foan chipped in with 18 from a middle order
berth and Perrott demonstrated his all-round skills with a knock
of 30.
However it was the late order pairing of the experienced Rob
Acton and the even more experienced Pete Hardy, who came
together to take the hosts over the winning line in the final
over. Acton finished unbeaten on 27, Hardy on 17 and the pair
put on 45 for the unbroken eighth wicket, as victory was reached
on 197-7.
The final word on this game must go - with an element of
sympathy - to Luke Wrightson who made a welcome return to action
for the side, but saw at least two wickets 'dropped' by team
mates in the outfield - one by his great friend Mike Wise. Never
mind Luke - better times are surely just round the corner - if
there’s a safe pair hands waiting there!
