1st XI v Abbotskerswell – 15th June 2019

Acton action! – left-armer takes five for seven

Bradninch 1st XI left-armer Ross Acton returned the extraordinary figures of six wickets for five runs from seven overs – three of which were maidens as hosts Abbotskerswell were, quite literally, blown away.

With regular skipper Eliot Acton away and Gary Chappell also unavailable, Tim Piper took charge and, when the won the toss, wasted no time in putting the home side in.
‘Roscoe’ [Ross Acton] opened the bowling and bagged a leg before decision with the second delivery of the match.

Craig Penberthy shared the new ball duties and he claimed the second wicket and, when Acton struck again with another leg before decision, the Abbots’ were 11-3 and their top three all had zero beside their names in the batting order!

Penberthy got a second – like his first – clean-bowled and Acton bagged a third; this one a clean-bowled and the home side were suddenly 17-5.

When Roscoe then got his third leg before decision, he had four wickets and the Abbots’ were in disarray at 17-6!

They never recovered, and the tail did not wag as they were bowled out for 37 in one delivery shy of 14 overs! The Acton return of five saw him land four leg before decisions. The Penberthy return was 2-24 in five overs and Tallan Burns had 2-7 in 1.5 overs.

In the reply, Bradninch lost Kian Burns for one and then Mark Ashplant for four. They also lost Tom Piper for nine, but the winning line was crossed four balls into the 12th over with an unbeaten 13 from Leon Horn seeing them over the line.

The Acton return means he now has 23 wickets this season and only Cornwood bowler Craig James, with 29, can better that across the league after seven games.
