Piper calls the tune (again) before Farley ‘fourfer’ as Budleigh are beaten in top-of-the-table clash
At the halfway stage of the Tolchards Devon league A Division campaign it’s a case of ‘Mission half accomplished’ for skipper Eliot Acton and his Bradninch 1st XI men for, after a matchday nine 80-run home win over promotion-chasing rivals Budleigh Salterton, the Kensham Park men sit in a promotion spot, tucked in just behind leaders Cornwood.
After being invited to bat, Gary Chappell and Thom Bunker gave Bradninch an 86-run start for the opening wicket which was that of Bunker for 25.
Tim Piper joined Chappell and they took the score to 118 before Chappell fell, but not before he had hit a 58-ball 75, rifling a dozen fours and smashing a brace of sixes. Ross Acton was next man in, and he and Piper took the total to 174 before Acton fell for 34. Piper was joined by Leon Horn, but the new man in perished for 11 when the total was on 200.
Next man in — and out — was Tallan Burns who, a week after a magnificent century for the 2nd XI, fell to a second ball duck! With Will Squire next in — and out — for six, the score was 210-6.
Teenager Josh Farley joined Piper and the pair took the total to 237 when Farley was out for 11. Mark Ashplant joined Piper and they took the score to 268 before Ashplant was run out for 12.
With the score on 270, Piper’s splendid innings came to an end as he fell just nine runs short of what would have been a richly deserved century. Paul Nott was the last man in — and out as the innings closed on 270 with one ball of the 49th and penultimate over to be bowled.
Budleigh got a half-century stand for the opening wicket which fell with the score on 53.
Marc Trotman bowled by Tallan Burns for 33. Ed Doble joined Robinson, but he was bowled by Gary Chappell having scored nine with the total then 84-2 and the third wicket to be taken was the ‘prized’ one of Zimbabwean Tarisai Musakanda, caught by Will Squire off Josh Farley for nine to leave Budleigh 96-3.
It was soon 106-4 as Squire held another catch to remove Tom Oxland, giving Ross Acton a wicket. Josh Farley claimed the fifth and sixth wickets — the latter thanks to a Tallan Burns catch to leave Budleigh 131-6.
It was soon 153-7 with Squire holding a third catch and young Farley claiming a third wicket. A Farley throw accounted for the run-out which saw Budleigh eight down and, when former Bradninch skipper Joel Murphy was bowled by Gary Chappell it was 190-9 and Chappell then got the wicket of Matt Murphy — son of Joel to see Budleigh 190 all out after 45 overs.
Josh Farley took the bowling honours with figures of 4-49 from 10 overs and the Gary Chappell return was 3-26 from eight. Ross Acton and Tallan Burns picked up single wickets.
