1st XI v Plympton – 6th July 2019

‘Chaps’ and ‘Pipes’ guide 1st XI to home win

After 10 matchdays in the 2019 Tolchards Devon Cricket League campaign, Bradninch 1st XI sit a dozen points clear of the third placed team and are looking good for an instant return to the top flight.

Their latest victory, an eighth win in 10 games, was a six-wicket Kensham Park win over Plympton.

On another ‘road’ of a batting strip, another good turnout of support witnessed 570 runs and 12 wickets — and also saw two more splendid knocks from Gary Chappell and Tim Piper.

Indeed, in the latest standings — both ‘Chaps’ and ‘Pipes’ feature in the top 10 in terms of individual batting efforts this season so far.

Plympton won the toss and batted first and made their way to a close of 283-8 from their 50 overs.

Six players shared the bowling duties and the honours were shared by Gary Chappell and skipper Eliot Acton with ‘Chaps’ returning figures of 3-53 from 10 overs while the skipper’s return was 3-55 from nine.

Josh Farley was the other bowler to bag a wicket with his return being 1-60 from 10. The non-wicket taking bowlers were: Ross Acton (0-41 from 10), Craig Penberthy (0-50 from 10) and Tallan Burns (0-13 from one over).

Gary Chappell and Thom Bunker led the run-chase and they had put on 35 when Bunker was bowled for 17. Kian Burns joined Chappell and they took the pair to 117 before Burns fell for a run-a-ball 36.

Tom Piper was next man in and he continued his rich vein of form, helping ‘Chaps’ add 172 before the latter became the third home wicket to fall, but not before he had scored a second league century of the campaign, dismissed on this occasion for 100 from 109 deliveries hitting 10 fours and three sixes.

There was one more wicket lost with Mark Ashplant falling to a third ball duck which left Tallan Burns (8) and Piper (84 from 94 deliveries with a dozen fours) as Bradninch wrapped up a six-wicket win, sailing over the finishing line with seven overs to spare!
