Bunker top scores then skipper takes three wickets as 1st XI win at Bideford – now for the ‘Big One’
The Tolchards Devon Cricket League reaches the two thirds mark of the campaign this Saturday (July 20) and Bradninch 1st XI are involved in arguably one of the ‘matches of the day’ as they travel to visit to the only team that sit higher than them in the A Division table, Cornwood.
Last time out, Bradninch won a 9th game in 11 outings — their only defeats this season have been a three-wicket home defeat to Cornwood on May 18 and a seven-wicket loss at Tavistock on June 7 — bagged a 31-run win at Bideford.
A feature of the win in North Devon was a splendid half-century from Thom Bunker, who top-scored with 61.
Batting first, Gary Chappell (25 from a dozen balls), ‘Bunks’, Kian Burns (46) and Tim Piper (36), all served up runs from the top four berths, but the rest of the batting failed to deliver — save for a contribution of not-out 17 from number eight Will Squire.
The others to be in — and out — were skipper Eliot Acton (6), Leon Horn (4), Mark Ashplant (2) and Will Greig (1) as the side closed on 220-8 after their 50 overs.
With Ross Acton resting his troublesome back, skipper Acton used six bowlers, but they combined well enough to restrict the home side to 189-7 in their 50 overs.
It was the skipper who bagged the bowling honours with figures of 3-47 from 10.
There was a rare wicketless afternoon for Gary Chappell, though his full shift of 10 overs did go for a miserly 27 runs.
Josh Farley sent down his 10 overs for a fine return of 2-29 and the only other wicket taker was Craig Penberthy, who took the new ball and finished with 1-40 from nine. Tim Piper (0-8 from one) and Will Squire (0-30 from 10) were the other bowlers used.
