Another victory but promotion hopes are hit by results elsewhere
Bradninch 1st XI claimed a 40-run success in their ‘must-win’ Tolchards Devon League ‘A’ Division home game against Abbotskerswell, but it may prove to be a win that ultimately, is in vain for the outcome of the game at Budleigh, where Hatherleigh were the winners, means that, with two games to go, Bradninch need some help from elsewhere if they are to make a return to the top-flight.
In a rain-hit game that was reduced to 37-overs per side, Bradninch batted first and closed on 197-5.
Opener Thom Bunker provided the top-score of the innings, a knock of 38 from 75 balls faced.
Fellow opener Gary Chappell scored one fewer, out to the 75th delivery he faced having scored 37 and there were also contributions from Tom Piper (27no from 35 balls), Kian Burns (23 from 18) and Ross Acton (17no from 11).
Abbotskerswell were then bundled out for 157 in 33.2 overs with Craig Penberthy netting the derby honours with figures of 3-24 while Gary Chappell bagged a brace for wickets for 13 runs from eight overs and there was a wicket each for Ross Acton, Charlie Sheen and Josh Farley.
At Ottermouth, Hatherleigh were invited to bat by Budleigh and they scored 205-9 in their 49 overs before bowling the hosts out for 110 in 37.5 overs.
There was also a surprise defeat for Cornwood at home to Tavistock — who are also in the promotion race — though very much as the ‘outsiders’ of the five teams chasing then lucrative top two spots.
With just two matches to go and a maximum of 40 points to play for the top five stand as:
Cornwood 269 (to play Ivybridge (A) and Plympton (H)
Hatherleigh 256 (to play Bideford (A) and Ivybridge (H)
Bradninch 244 (to play Tavistock (H) and Budleigh (A)
Budleigh 240 (to play Abbotskerswell (A) and Bradninch (H)
Tavistock 231 (to play Bradninch (A) and Bideford (H)
