This coming Saturday (May 30) should have been matchday five of the 2020 Tolchards Devon League season. However, there’s no cricket possible before, at the earliest, July 1 and so we have decided to ‘compensate’ for the lack of cricket with a look back at recent matchday five action for the two Bradninch XIs.
Matchday five of the Devon Cricket League in the 2016 season will remain fixed in the memory of anyone who was at Creedy Park, Sandford that day for Gary Chappell stroked his way to a sublime double-century.
Other matchday five ‘specials’ in recent seasons have included a Ross Acton six-wicket haul in the 2019 campaign, a terrific four-wicket win for the 2nd XI in 2018, a knock of 84 from Thom Bunker for the 2nd XI in 2016 and, in the same game, a four-wicket haul for Mark Perrott. Oh yes, and on matchday five of the 2015 season Ryan Shrewsbury and Luke Wrightson put on 69 for the eighth wicket in the 2nd XI defeat at Braunton.
Here’s matchday five for our two senior XIs over the past five seasons.
Matchday five was played out on June 1 and it saw the 1st XI defeat Hatherleigh by 110 runs in an A Division meeting.
Gary Chappell top-scored with a 41-ball 14-boundary 67 and there were also contributions from Tim Piper (36), Ross Acton (36), Leon Horn (25) and Kian Burns (20) in a Ninch total of 241 all out from 49.4 overs. Ross Acton then whipped out the first four Hatherleigh batsmen for just 14 runs and went on to finish with figures of 6-15 as the home side were bundled out for 131 in 43.5 overs.
On the same day, back at Kensham Avenue, the 2nd XI were being mauled by Topsham St James 1st XI in a contest that lasted less than 30 overs!
Batting first, Bradninch 2nds were bowled out for 59 in 18.2 overs with the only scores of double figures coming from Kalann Nessling (12), Ryan Shrewsberry (12), Rob Acton (11) and Will Greig (10). James Mills then got the one visiting wicket to fall as a nine-wicket win was racked up in 10.4 overs.
Matchday five was played out on June 2 and that day saw the 1st XI lose their Premier Division meeting with Sidmouth by six wickets.
Rory Thomas (31), Tendai Maruma (25) and Eliot Acton (22) were the only batsmen to offer much resistance in an all-out total of 117 and then Eliot Acton and Tendai Maruma each bagged two wickets as Sidmouth closed out a comfortable victory.
On the same day the 2nd XI were handsome four wicket winners over Clyst St George 2nd XI. The Bohea Field men batted first and Bradninch used eight bowlers with Chris Dean (2-31) and Will Birley (2-25) the most successful as the innings closed on 215-7. Bradninch closed out a four-wicket win halfway through the 39th over thanks to a run-a-ball 70 from Will Birley and supporting knocks from Chris Acton (48), Rob Acton (31), Derrick Foan (22no) and Tom Porter (27).
The 1st XI were in Premier Division action, winning by five wickets against Plymouth.
Andrew Buzza (3-43) and Matt Parker (3-38) were the main wicket takers as Plymouth were bowled out for 187 and then Gary Chappell hit 91 and Tim Piper an unbeaten 30 as victory was sealed with nine balls remaining.
The 2nd XI were beaten by seven wickets by Alphington 2nds in a B Division East 2nd XI match.
Vinny Clark (13), Connor Carthew (13) and Bryn Jones (12) were the only double figure contributors with the bat as Bradninch were bowled out for 70 in 22 overs. Jason Dowrick (2-21) and Vinny Clark (1-11) then shared the three wickets that Alphington lost in their successful run chase.
Gary Chappell was the ‘star of the show’ on this particular matchday, Saturday, June 4 as he scored that double-century in the 173-run win at Sandford.
‘Chaps’ hit 205 and the ‘best of the rest’ in a team-score of 364-4 were knocks of 58 from Andrew Buzza and 56 from Ross Acton. Sandford were then bowled out for 191 with both Will Squire and Cameron Suidgeest taking three wicket hauls.
The 2nd XI were in B Division East 2nd XI action that day and they too won, beating Bideford, Littleham and Westward Ho II by 17 runs.
Batting first, Thom Bunker (84), Rob Acton (31) and Bryn Jones (28) led Bradninch to a close of 239-7 and then Mark Perrott (4-47) and Rob Acton (3-31) combined to bowl the North Devon side out for 222.
Matchday five was played out on the final Saturday of May and it saw Bradninch 1st XI lose their A Division game against Brixham by 179 runs.
Brixham batted first and powered to a close of 298-3. The three wickets were shared by Luandre van Wyk, Ross Acton and Will Squire. Bradninch were then bowled out for 119 with the only contributions of double figures coming from Lawrence Greenway (40), number nine Will Greig (27), Chris Metters (14) and extras (13).
On the same day the 2nd XI went down by 44 runs in their meeting with Braunton 2nds who batted first and scored 223-5 with second change Mark Perrott and third change Will Birley both bagging a brace of wickets. In the reply, Chris Acton, Derrick Foan and Kev Manning all fell without troubling the scorers and the top scores were those from Ryan Shrewsbury (67), Luke Wrightson (24) — the two added 69 for the 8th wicket — and Will Birley (23), who collectively saw their side from a perilous 26-5 after a dozen overs to the all-out score of 179.
