Today June 6, should have seen our 1st and 2nd XI in Tolchards Devon League action. However, owing to the Coronavirus pandemic there remains no cricket!
The last time we played on this date was back in the 2015 season when the 1st XI losing at home to Barton and the 2nds going down at Chudleigh. However, matchday six on each of the last two seasons have seen both XIs win their respective league matches. Here we take a look at the matchday six results in each of the past five campaigns.
Matchday six last year (2019) produced wins for both the 1st and 2nd XIs.
The 1st XI entertained Barton and thrashed them by 176-runs.
Batting first, Kian Burns top-scored with 83 — he and Charlie Sheen (37) added 100 for the second wicket, and Tim Piper chipped in with 45 as Bradninch closed on 251-8. Gary Chappell then sent down 10 overs and returned the impressive figures of 5-11. Charlie Sheen completed a good day’s all-round shift with 3-15 from 7.4 overs and Josh Farley sent down seven overs for his return of 2-13 as Barton were bowled out for just 75 with only two of their batsmen registering double figure scores.
The 2nd XI were 72-run winners when they travelled to Countess Wear 1st XI.
Will Birley (89) and Chris Acton (66) put on 130 for the first wicket and then Will Greig (61) slammed a quick-fire half century as he and Birley added 102 for the second wicket. Bradninch closed on 268-4 and then, with Countess Wear 187-3, fifth change Chris Dean (3-6 from two overs) and fourth change Will Birley (2-19) bowled in tandem to ensure additional bowling points were picked up as the home side closed on 196-8.
In the 2018 season, matchday six fell on June 9 and again both the 1st and 2nd XI won. The 1st XI entertained Hatherleigh and claimed a 52-run win.
Rory Thomas top-scored with 62 and there were knocks of 32 from Gary Chappell and 31 from Charlie Walker before Bradninch found themselves facing a sub-200 total on 184-8. However, number nine bat, Will Greig then scored 30 and, with the last two batsmen, Tallan Burns (21) and Chris Acton (15no) also chipping in, the tail wagged to take the total to a close of 245 all out. Hatherleigh were then bowled out for 193 with the bowling honours taken by Tendai Maruma (4-44) and Gary Chappell (3-26).
The 2nd XI made the short trip across to Clyst Hydon where they won by nine wickets in a contest that lasted for just 40 overs and three balls!
Clyst Hydon batted first and were bowled out for 111 in 26.4 overs with Thom Bunker (4-19), Rob Acton (3-23) and Liam Reed (2-24) taking the bulk of the wickets — Will Birley (30no), Kian Burns (46 from 23 deliveries) and Thom Bunker (32no) then saw their side to a nine wicket victory with the win sealed in one ball shy of 14 overs.
In the 2017 season saw matchday six played on June 10 and it was not a good day for the club as both 1st and 2nd XI suffered defeats.
The 1st XI were beaten at home in a Premier Division game by Bovey Tracey who bagged themselves a seven wicket win.
Batting first, it was number eight bat Will Greig who top-scored with a run-a-ball 50 and other contributions came from Tim Piper (37), Matt Foster (24) and Gary Chappell (23) as Bradninch were bowled out for 173 in exactly 50 overs. Bovey sailed home in just over 37 overs losing only three wickets — two falling to fourth change Andrew Buzza (2-49) and the other to Ross Acton (1-36).
On the same day the 2nd XI suffered a heavy defeat at Seaton 2nds in a B Division 2nd XI fixture.
The home side batted first and closed on 232-6 with brothers Chris Acton (2-26) and Rob Acton (2-49) the most successful of the Bradninch bowlers. Chris Acton then top-scored with 23 in a reply that ended with the side bowled out for 96 in 26 overs and two balls. The ‘best of the rest’ with the bat for Bradninch were knocks of 18 from Bryn Jones and Tom Porter.
In 2016 the 1st XI played a matchday six A Division game on June 11 when they recorded a quick-fire 10-wicket win over Chudleigh.
The visiting side were put in and it was the new-ball bowling of Ross Acton and Cameron Suidgeest that saw them slip to 7-4 from which they never recovered, being bowled out for 62 in just 26.4 overs. Acton finished with figures of 5-14 from 10 overs while the Suidgeest return was 3-20 from 10. The other two wickets were shared by Gary Chappell and Andrew Buzza. Chappell then hit a run-a-ball unbeaten 33 and Ross Acton hit an unbeaten 24 as Bradninch raced to a 10 wicket win with the whole match not seeing 40 overs!
On the same day, Bradninch 2nds were 53-run winners of their B Division East 2nd XI game at Chudleigh.
Batting first, Bradninch lost Chris Acton without a run being scored, but then Thom Bunker (54), Ryan Shrewsberry (43) and Will Greig (42) together with Rob Acton (23) and Bryn Jones (22) chipped in to see their side to a close of 231 all out in 45 overs. Will Greig, Phil Chappell and Will Birley each bagged a brace of wickets as Chudleigh were then bowled out for 178.
In 2015 matchday six was played out on Saturday June 6 with the 1st XI losing their A Division home meeting with Barton by four wickets.
Batting first, Bradninch were bowled out for 180 with Chris Metters top scoring with 68. The ‘best of the rest’ was a knock of 23 from Luandre Van Wyk. Barton won the game with a reply of 183-6 with the wicket takers for Bradninch being Ross Acton (3-44), Luandre Van Wyk (2-50) and Charlie Walker (1-32).
On the same day the 2nd XI were in B Division 2nd XI action, going down by 32 runs on their visit to Chudleigh 2nds.
Chudleigh batted first and closed on 209-8 with Luke Wrightson (3-46), the pick of the bowlers – four others each took a single wicket. Bradninch 2nds replied with 120 all out and only four batsmen reached double figures with the top score being the 22 scored by number seven bat Chris Dean. The others to register double figure scores with the bat were, number three, Will Greig (21), number eight, Will Birley (16) and opener Chris Acton (12)
