Chappell stars with the bat as Budleigh are beaten at Kensham Park

Gary Chappell starred with the bat as Bradninch made a winning start to their Tolchards Devon League A Division campaign, beating visiting Budleigh Salterton by a margin of 36 runs in a rain affected contest at Kensham Park.

Chappell, who opened the innings and lost three partners; Rory Thomas (2), Mitchell Pugh (6) and Josh Farley (3) to leave the home side on 26-3. Ross Acton then joined Chappell and the pair took the total to 75 before Acton fell for 17. Thom Bunker was next in, and out, bbut not before he had helped see  the total into three figures, Bunker departing for 17 with the score then 112-5. Aryan Raigangar then teamed up with Chappell to take Ninch to 166, the pair adding 54 for the sixth wicket which was that of league debut playing Raigangar who scored 21 including a six and two fours. At this stage ‘Chaps’ was on 87 and, when Will Squire became the seventh wicket to fall, dismissed for 16, Chaps was 10 short of his latest century.

Craig Penberthy was next in and he helped Chappell to reach his ton and indeed take the score on to 226-8 with the opener not out 120 as Penberthy marched back, out for 10.

The skipper was the next man and, with the score on 250l, Chappell was finally dismissed. He had scored 140 from the 132 balls  he faced and his knock included 18 fours and six sixes.

Captain Acton continued to ‘go after’ the Budleigh bowling as and he faced just 20 deliveries for his 34, a knock that included five fours and a six.

The home innings closed with Acton unbeaten on 34 while Darren Paul (3) was the other not out batsman and Bradninch had posted a healthy 284-9 from their 50 overs.

 

The pick of the Budleigh bowling returns was the 2-47 from nine overs by Sean Butler.

Lloyd Murrin and Joel Murphy each bagged a brace and three others each took a single  wicket.

 

Rain then arrived at Kensham Park to ultimately see Budleigh face a target of 172 from 22 overs.

 

They managed to get to 135-7 thanks, in the main, to a knock of 36 from James Doble while Matthew Kimber (24), Ed Doble (22) and Harry Parkin (21) also contributed.

 

Topping the Bradninch bowling returns was Gary Chappell (2-29 from six overs) and four other bowlers each claimed a wicket; Mitchell Pugh (1-5 from three overs); Craig Penberthy (1-21 from 3), Aryan Raigangar (1-21 from 2) and Josh Farley (1-35 from four). Ross Acton (0-20 from five) was the sixth bowler used as Bradninch took 18 points to the six that Budleigh took home with them.
