Bradninch Under-12s went out of their cup competition when beaten by a powerful Thorverton side, but there were plenty of positives to take from the game for ‘Ninch’ U12s coach Piers Kotting.
Thorverton batted first and both their openers, jack Hutchings and Zac Mildon put bat to ball with great effect. Indeed both made their way comfortably to the mandatory retirement score of 40 – Jack retiring having scored 41 while Zac finished with one more.
When the openers left the crease there was little respite for the home bowlers for Isaac May continued the impressive Thorverton batting, hitting a string of fours before he became the one visiting batsman to be dismissed, bowled by Daniel Huxtable for 34.
Thorverton closed on an imposing 157-1 off their 20 overs.
For the Bradninch bowling effort, lone wicket taker Daniel takes the honours with his return being 1-19 from three overs. In terms of the best ‘economy’ figures amongst the ‘Ninch’ bowlers; captain Robert ‘Bobby’ Marsh had figures of 0-10 from two overs while both Alice Kotting and Ben Hutchinson returned figures of 0-11, also from two overs while Thomas Power returned figures of 0-12 from his two overs.
Daniel Huxtable and Tom Power launched the Bradninch reply, but Daniel was bowled for one with the score on five.
Next in was ‘Ninch’ captain Bobby Marsh, but he got a superb delivery from Archie Davidson – who also claimed the first wicket – again by hitting the stumps.
Freya Kotting then joined opener Tom [Power] and the pair stayed together, impressively too, for nine overs, adding 20 for the third wicket before Freya was bowled by Aaron Brazier having scored four. With Freya out, it was her sister Alice who took over and she too batted with real gusto.
Indeed, she and Tom added 17 for the fourth wicket which was that of Alice, run out, but not before she had scored eight.
Tom [Power] carried his bat as Bradninch closed on 49-4 leaving Thorverton winners by a margin of 109 runs.
There were some impressive bowling figures from the Thors, none more so than the two overs and two maidens sent down by Evie Kirk whole Archie Davidson claimed the best figures in terms of wicket taking with his return being 2-6 from three overs. Rhys Coates and Oliver Bate both sent down three overs, each returning figures of 0-5 and Aaron Brazier’s return was 1-1 from one over.
On the night the better team won, but this Bradninch Under-12 team put in a fine all-round effort and they left the pitch to great applause from a large crowd at Kensham Park after a contest that was played in a wonderful spirit.
Well played Thorverton, and well played out Under-12s.
