We begin what will be a weekly preview of the opposition for both our league sides in the coming weekend. This Saturday (May 2) sees the start of a new Tolchards Devon League campaign. Both BCC elevens meet Bideford teams with the senior sides meeting at Kensham Park and the 2nds locking horns in North Devon.
The 1st XI open their Tolchards Devon League A Division campaign against a Bideford side who were promoted at the end of last season. Bideford have already played a couple of early season matches, easing to a comprehensive nine-wicket North Devon League success on their visit to Barnstaple where, after bowling Barum out for 142 (A Hannam 4-21), they lost just one wicket in the run-chase that took them just 19.3 overs with W Barratt (60 not out) and R Stanbury (54) the principle run getters. They also played a warm-up friendly against Taunton St Andrews who batted first and scored 254-9 which Bideford replied to, closing on 190-5.
For Chris Acton and a new-look second eleven, it’s a trip up the North Devon Link Road – so how have opponents Bideford II been doing in warm-up games?
Bideford II suffered a seven-wicket defeat to North Devon II in a warm-up game. Batting first Bideford scored 163 all out with Josh Atkinson (45), skipper Marten Stanbury (41) and Jamie Lathwell (45 off 56 balls), making the key contributions.
Bideford II finished fourth in last year’s 2nd XI C Division after winning nine of their 18 matches.
Andy Webbe topped the run charts for the entire division – he struck four centuries in the league campaign whilst young Jamie Lathwell, son of former England player Mark Lathwell, was the sides leading wicket taker with 20.
So there you have – action ahead for both BCC teams and hopefully a win double (weather and opposition allowing) on the opening day of the 2015 Tolchards Devon League.
