Bunks smashes team into final berth

The BCC indoor 6-a-side team showed they are seriously intent on retaining the Exeter Indoor Cricket League Plate trophy after they powered their way into this season’s final, thrashing University III in the semi-finals at the Devon Cricket Centre.

What’s more the win ended a miserable run of seven successive defeats this season.

The hallmark of the Plate semi-final success was an outstanding effort both with the ball and fielding as they bowled out the students for a paltry score and then skipper Thom Bunker smashed his side to a big win.

The bowling honours – in wicket terms, went to the experienced Brian Cann who picked up two wickets, but there was another superb return from Matt Parker who has been such a revelation since joining the team at the start of this indoor season.

However, off-spinner Will Birley rolled the clock back to when he caught the eye of the East Devon selectors by bowling 10 dot balls in the 15 deliveries (2.3) overs he bowled. After the students had been bowled out for 65 with three balls remaining, Brian Cann remarked: “Will [Birley) bowled superbly, even the umpire at square leg remarked how consistent he was with line and length.”

With a low score to chase the batting effort was dealt a huge blow with Josh Cann being run out for just three in a titanic mix-up with skipper, Thom Bunker.

Clearly annoyed with himself, the skipper, joined by number three bat Bryn Jones, took his frustration out on the University bowlers off whom he smashed three big sixes. Jones played the ‘perfect’ indoor anchor role and, when Bunker had to retire for a hard-hitting unbeaten 29, it was Jones and Brian Cann who saw the side to victory with still half the 12 overs to play with!

So the BCC indoor now head for the 2016 indoor season FINALS NIGHT at which they will face the daunting task of looking to bag a second win of the season against either of the big Division One duo, league champions University 1st or  Bovey Tracey. That match will have a 7.30pm start next Friday (December 9) at the Devon Cricket Centre.
