Devon League to undergo major overhaul

The Devon Cricket League has announced that it is to have a complete overhaul of its league structure from the 2018 season.

The decision was ratified at an extraordinary annual general meeting of the league held in Exeter.

The proposal that had been put to the clubs was:

“That from the 2018 season the Devon Cricket League becomes a Single Tier Structure (All Through League) in line with the structure plan attached with this agenda. Promotion and relegation will take place on the basis of two teams being promoted and two teams being relegated from each division.”

There were 50 clubs in favour of the proposal and 14 against and therefore the proposal got the required two-thirds majority.

A league statement issued after the meeting said:

“The League will now commence the process of looking at any changes that will need to be made to the constitution and playing regulations. These will be circulated to clubs with a view to their being discussed at both the club chairman’s and end of season divisional meetings in 2017.”

So how does this effect the Bradninch 2nd XI?

It’s quite simple really (not)! – There are many different permutations.

A first place finish in the B Division 2nd XI East at the end of the current season would see the team line up in 2018 in the new E Division East taking on 1st XIs of such clubs as Kentisbeare, Honiton, Tiverton and Topsham St James.

A finish from second to 8th in the current B Division 2nd XI East will leave the 2nd XI in a new division of F Division East which would embrace seven of the clubs they will play this coming season plus three others – but no current 1st XI teams.

In the unfortunate situation that the BCC 2nd XI finished second bottom or bottom of the B Division East 2nd XI table in 2017, they would appear in the new G Division East in 2018 where they would play against 2nd XIs such as Alphington II, Kilmington II, Clyst Hydon II and Clyst St George II.

For the BCC 1st XI it’s simple – a top eight finish means they stay at the top level in 2018 while a bottom two finish would mean they would play in the 2018 season as an A Division side.

In general the ‘new mix’ of 2nd XI team splaying alongside 1st XI teams would begin AFTER B Division with C Division East the highest level that a mix of teams would be seen.
