The BCC indoor 6-a-side team won their first match of the 2015 Exeter Indoor League at the Devon Cricket Centre on Friday night.
Having played all eight games in the 2015 season without savouring success it was a very sweet moment for all involved!
Countess Wear batted first and were restricted to 105-5 thanks to some tight bowling and outstanding fielding. Will Greig skippered the side and led by example with some stunning stops. Will Birley led the bowling honours with six dot-balls and figures of 2-21 from his three overs (that’s the limit per bowler in this league).
Mark Ashplant also bagged a brace – he bowled six dot-balls and took 2-25 from three overs. The others to bowl were; Will Greig (six dot balls and 1-23 from three), Max Cooper (four dot-balls and 0-22 in two) and Ryan Shrewsberry (one dot-ball, 0-10 in one).
Max Cooper held two catches and other catches were held by Mark Ashplant and Will Greig, the latter a sharp return catch off his own bowling and the fifth wicket to fall was a slick stumping by Tom Bunker.
The reply was launched by teenagers Tom Bunker and Max Cooper and Bunker immediately showed just what a powerful player he is as he slammed his way to a 12-ball retirement having reached 25 (that’s the retirement figure in this format – a batsman can return once all wickets / other retirements, have happened.
Cooper took eight balls to get going, but then showed how hard – and straight – he can hit the ball and he also went on to retire, unbeaten on 26.
Ryan Shrewsberry, making his debut in the indoor game was next in and he was run out for six. Mark Ashplant took over, but he was caught and bowled for three and this sent in Will Greig who then ran out Will Birley without the youngster facing a ball. However, the big man atoned by slamming two huge sixes on his way to an unbeaten 20 from nine balls. Tom Bunker returned to see the job out with the winning runs fittingly struck by the youngster as he closed unbeaten on 41 with BCC reaching victory with a full 100 balls to spare!
