Indoor campaign begins with narrow defeat

The indoor team began a new campaign on Friday night with a game against a very strong University II – but ran the students mighty close!

Under new indoor skipper Thom Bunker and with teenager Matt Parker wearing BCC colours for the first time, the BCC 6-a-side team also included Josh Cann, Will Birley, Will Greig and Dave Bunker.

The students batted first and closed on 122 which represented an excellent half-an-hour of work from the BCC six. Parker marked his debut with a brace of wickets and the old campaigner that is Bunks ‘senior’, also bagged a pair.

Will Birley, still returning from the shoulder injury that killed half his regular season – did not turn his arm over, but Will Greig, Josh Cann and skipper Bunks Junior, all did and collectively the bowlers did a fine job.

A 123 target is probably a tad below ‘par’ for the indoor league at the Devon Cricket Centre. The skipper and Josh Cann opened and the pair looked good together with Bunker junior launching a trademark six to the gallery end before being unlucky, caught from a ball that came off the netting, with a fielder in the right place at the right time.

Will Greig and Will Birley soon returned to the viewing area having added nine and two respectively, but Cann continued to take the game to the students – having to ‘retire’ once he reached 25 (as per competition rules).

Parker and Bunker both added to the total and when they were both dismissed it left Cann to fight the good fight on his own. Something he managed for another four balls before he too was out looking for the big hits that the team needed as they fell just 25 runs short.

All in all, an excellent first night of the new indoor season.
