Plate final defeat for Thom’s team

The BCC indoor six-a-side team saw their reign as Exeter Indoor League Plate holders ended when they lost to Division One champions University in the final.

The ‘miss-match’ between the team that won Division One (losing just once all season – to Cullompton) will play in the January South West Regional Finals and a Bradninch side that did not win a single game in the Division Two league season (six matches) ended as expected, in a big win for the students.

The students batted first and the ‘Ninch team can be pleased with their efforts in restricting Uni to 118-4. Will Birley held a return catch, there was a wicket also for Josh Cann, one also for Brian Cann and a run-out. The reply was not helped by the loss of skipper Thom Bunker for a single – the first time in nine knocks throughout the season that the youngster has failed with the bat. Will Greig hit out, Josh Cann was run out by father Brian, Will Birley played on and Dave Bunker – that good old (?) cricketing ace (is there a better coach out there) was the final wicket to fall as the reply closed on 69 all out – almost half their runs coming from extras!

So there ends another season – once again the same folk have supported the effort. It continues to be a concern that there’s never any interest for this concept of looking to extend the cricket season and indeed bring some silverware to the club. Most galling this season for the gallant regulars who did turn out was having to watch neighbours Cullompton win the cup and make all the right headlines as the only team to defeat the league champions – who they also beat in the cup.

Anyway, thanks are due in no small way to: Thom Bunker, who skippered throughout and was, like Will Birley, a regular feature – the only players to play in every game. Dave Bunker, Will Greig, Bryn Jones, The Cann duo of Dad Brian and son Josh, Matt Parker (will be seeing him on grass wickets – here’s hoping for he would be a terrific new asset to the club), Liam Reed, Riley Burgess and guest appearances from friends of Thom whenever numbers required.
