Quiz Night a roaring success

The 125th birthday year functions kicked off on Saturday, January 23 with a QUIZ NIGHT at the Kensham Club which drew a near capacity attendance! Fourteen tables had been laid and 12 were taken up with 69 folk playing in 12 teams for the honour of being crowned Quiz Whizzes!

Proceedings got underway at 8.15pm and the final question was read out at 10.32pm with in-between some five rounds and a meal break for a Chicken Tikka curry with Nan bread (or Quorn Shepherds Pie), followed by an ice cream. With a charge of £5 a head for the evening it meant for a £345 incoming and only a £75 outgoing – so a healthy profit too for club funds and a jolly good bar take to boot!

Round one comprised 20 questions of general knowledge and 10 of current affairs (30 points on offer), round two was a 20 point 20-picture quiz with TV shows from 2015 the subject, round three was the memory round where two team members were given 90 seconds to memorise 15 objects and then 90 seconds back at their table to detail them – also in this round was a numbers game and a word game with 20 points in total on offer. A break followed for food before round four which was the ENVELOPE round with 15 subjects – each of 20 questions – offered to the team with the team holding then LOWEST score getting first choice (20 points). The fifth and final round was general knowledge with 20 points up for grabs. There was a joker for each team to play for double points, to be used in any of rounds 2, 3 4 or 5.

That meant a maximum score on the night of 130 points.

Winners – The Armless Appreciation Party

The winners, with a score of 96 were The Armless Appreciation party, whilst the runners-up spot saw a tie between The Delegators and The Six Muskatears who both scored 91 and, in a one-question shoot-out, it was the former who bagged the prize for runners-up. At the other end of the scale the wooden-spoonists were the team Only Fools plus Liam (bit unfair on them being lowest as they were also the kitchen team who did a FANTATSTIC job, so take a bow Alan and Julie Dowrick, Rob and Carol Acton and Simon and Jill Glendining and Liam Reed) – The wooden-spoonists did finish equal with the Famous Five (both had 69 points) and a one-question shoot-out was won by the Famous Five so they avoided the wooden spoon!

The complete results were:

  1. The Armless Appreciation Party – 96
  2. The Delegators – 91
