Saturday’s opponents short-handed

The opening game of the pre-season for the BCC 1st XI will see them come up against a hosting Exmouth side missing a number of top players.

The match date clashes with the wedding of Devon player Trevor Anning, who is getting married to long-time partner Rachael Murrin and Devon star David Lye is one of a number of other Exmouth players on the guest list.

As for their team this season, the Maer men have of course lost Lawrence Greenway to us here at Kensham Park and Chris Metters is another former Maer man to join BCC.

Exmouth skipper Richard Baggs has signed seam bowler Richard Sharples, batter Lee Evans and all-rounder Alvin Pollard.

Sharples is an opening bowler currently studying at the University of Exeter.

Evans, a Royal Marine, has played Combined Services cricket and Baggs has him pencilled in as a batting all-rounder.

Pollard is back for a second spell at Exmouth having been there previously in 2008. Last season he assisted Shobrooke Park having been with Alphington for the previous couple of seasons.

Arriving midway through the season is South African-born UK resident Mark Douglas, who bats in the middle order and bowls medium pace.

The other incoming player is an unnamed – as yet – West Indian pace bowler. It is not thought which of the new Maer men will be in the Exmouth side to face Bradninch on Saturday (April 11 – 2pm).
