The Sunday 1st XI suffered a second successive defeat in their North Devon Holiday Homes League programme as they went down by 18 runs at Bideford.
In recent seasons the team that ultimately wins the North Devon League loses no more than two games in a playing season and so already, two games in, there is no further room for error if that particular title, which was so nearly won last year, is to come to Kensham Park.
Bideford batted first and made 157-5 led by the in-form Matt Allin. Allin hit 109 in his side’s opening game defeat at North Devon and he was unbeaten on 94. Ross Acton was the pick of the bowling attack with 3-29 in nine tidy overs.
The reply never really got going and at 108-7 looked in trouble so it is testimony – once again, to the skills of Saturday 1st XI skipper Joel Murphy that victory was nearly snatched from the jaws of defeat.
Murphy hit an unbeaten 36 to add to the unbeaten 48 in match day one. But only Billy Wakeley (37) offered any real support and the reply closed on 139 in 42.1 overs.
