What a penultimate match day of the Tolchards Devon League 2016 season that was! The 1st XI and 2nd XI both suffered narrow defeats, but the net result was that the 2nds are all but safe and the 1st XI unearthed a new star seamer!
Dan Hardy has endured a miserable season this campaign as his batting – so often the best from the ranks – has been less than spectacular as his 11 knocks to date have seen him score just 147 runs in total!
However, against Ipplepen the senior side shuffled the pack in terms of the bowling and Hardy steamed in, down the hill from the Tennis Court End with some terrific seam bowling to claim the excellent figures of 3-17! We also saw skipper Gary Chappell get closer to that marvellous figure of 1,000 league runs in a single league season and safe hands Ross Acton pouch yet another catch – has he not claimed at least one catch in every game this title winning term? Oh yes, and not forgetting the likeable Aussie in the ranks – Cam Suidgeest – who was at the club late on Friday making sure the colts versus parents match went well – mm and back at the crack of dawn to roll the wicket for the 1st XI match – as he got another wicket to ensure that he ends the season as the senior XI’s leading wicket taker.
The 2nd XI were treated to another super knock from 17-year-old Thom Bunker who is in his first season at the club. Is he not the ‘find of the season’?
Bunker junior made the switch from Kentisbeare at the start of the season and has since scored his maiden senior cricket century, his maiden 1st XI half century and struck countless half centuries across all formats of the game in BC colours.
On the down side from the penultimate round of matches, the ‘quack-quack’ count from the 2nd XI was on the high side!
