If the club announcement of a new 1st XI skipper was received with real confidence and excitement a week before, then, the meeting held at the club on the penultimate Thursday of January arguably takes up even greater significance.
Club chairman Derrick Foan chaired the meeting to a small, but very committed group of parents and youngsters.
There was plenty of debate in the hour-long meeting and some very positive things came out of it!
It was agreed to form a junior committee to help run the section. The summer coaching programme was also set in stone with Friday nights at Kensham Park set to be CRICKET COACHING NIGHTS with all ages, girls and boys catered for with Steve Rowe and Dave Bunker the senior coaches being joined by the club’s new signing Devon Under-17’s Josh Cann.
There will also be parental help for the sessions which will run from 6pm to 7pm for the 13 years and under age group and 7pm to 8pm for the over-13s, including the clubs new Under-17 squad being assembled for a series of East Devon Youth League 40-over matches.
The club bar will be open each Friday evening in line with the ‘weekend hours’ which kick-in from the end of March.
Another new innovation for the youth section is to be social nights each Friday night that the men’s dart teams are not at home. In effect that means alternate Fridays from the first Friday in March when the colts and their parents will be more than welcome to get along and play some pool, darts, skittles and generally socialise.
One of the biggest things to come out of the meeting was that there are a number of parents who are ultra keen too get involved – YES, the penultimate Thursday in January may well prove to be a pivotal evening for the cricket club moving forward!
